Police Officer McLeod was shot and killed while taking police action during a robbery in progress. Rest in peace, Cherokee Indian Police Department, North Carolina, Detective Jeffrey Lee Smith (EOW October 23, 2026). Detective Smith and another officer were pursuing a wanted suspect who attempted to flee by jumping into a river. Detective Smith and his partner apprehended the suspect, but while pulling the suspect up the riverbank, Smith suffered a fatal medical emergency. He was 59 years old and had served with the Cherokee Indian Police Department for 15 years. He previously was a member of the Swain County Sheriff’s Office. He is survived by his daughter. Rest in peace, Lincoln County, Montana, Deputy Sheriff Ryan Terpsma (EOW October 30, 2026). Deputy Terpsma and a Eureka police officer were dispatched to a report of a disturb-ance at a residence in Eureka. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire. Deputy Terpsma was struck and killed, and the Eureka officer was wounded and hospitalized. Deputy Terpsma was 28 years old and had served with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for five months. Rest in peace, Logan County, West Virginia, Deputy Sheriff Caden Ryan Mullins (EOW October 24, 2026). Deputy Mullins was on patrol when his police vehicle was struck by a truck in an intersection. Deputy Mullins was killed in the crash. He was 23 years old and had served for one year and two months with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. The Port Authority Police Department Pipes and Drums Band was honored to join Tunnel to Towers for the groundbreaking of its Northfield, New Jersey, Veterans Village. The Northfield site will be the organization’s second Veterans Village in New Jersey. Through its National Homeless Veteran Program, Tunnel to Towers has provided housing assistance to more than 20,000 veterans and their families as part of its mission to eradicate veteran homelessness. On Sunday, October 25, a man committed the loathsome and nauseating act of defacing the North Memorial Pool of the 9/11 Memorial. The North and South Memorial Pools were constructed on the footprints of the Twin Towers and are inscribed with the names of those killed during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993. Those names include 37 Port Authority police officers and 47 Port Authority of NY and NJ civilian employees. Thankfully, the perpetrator was apprehended by Port Authority Police Officer Ryan Lopez and charged with various criminal offenses. Port Authority PBA President Frank Conti said of the suspect’s actions, “This was not a protest, nor did it bring attention to this person’s supposed cause. This was an inappropriately placed outrageous and vile act of vandalism disrespecting to the memories of those killed on September 11, 2001, and their families. The actions of this perpetrator failed to further his grievances yet succeeded in exhibiting his ignorance through criminal behavior.
