DeGeneste, who died on September 13, 2026. “For those who knew, worked with or learned from Henry, his passing is the loss of a remarkable member of the Port Authority Police family. Although his PAPD career ended in 1990, his impact on the Department is still felt today. “Henry joined the PAPD in 1967 and graduated at the top of his Academy class. He rose through the ranks to become the Department’s first African American superintendent. Retired San Bernardino, California, firefighter John Martin began a cycling journey across the U.S. on September 11, 2025, in honor of the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001. John stayed in firehouses during his yearlong trek and carried 2,977 dog tags, each bearing the name of a person who perished that day. He left a dog tag at each firehouse where he stayed and at every mile marker he passed. John’s epic journey ended on September 11, 2026, the 25th remembrance of 9/11, at the World Trade Center.
